DMV Offers Permits for New-to-You Vehicles

Nevada DMV now offers temporary movement permits for private party and used vehicle sales

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has launched a new online service designed to help customers who've recently purchased used vehicles.

The service affords new owners of used vehicles the ability to purchase one 30-day movement permit for a vehicle that is not yet registered in their name. "We're excited to be able to offer the 30-day permits to our customers," said DMV Director Julie Butler. "This was one of the most-requested online transactions, and it will help our customers drive their newly purchased vehicles legally prior to registration." Customers who’ve purchased a vehicle from a Nevada dealership are already provided a permit, and most of those vehicles are available to be registered online through the DMV’s Electronic Dealer Report of Sale system.

To purchase a permit, customers can visit the DMV's website at dmv.nv.gov and login to or create a MyDMV account. Once logged in, customers will select the "Temporary Movement Permit - Non-Registered Vehicle" option underneath the "Registration and Insurance" heading. The cost of a permit is $1 - the fine for driving an unregistered vehicle without a movement permit is up to $1,000.

"With our customers being able to purchase a movement permit for only a dollar from our website, there's a strong incentive for all Nevadans to make sure they're driving their newly-acquired vehicles legally," Butler said. Movement permits are one of the few transactions available on a walk-in basis at larger DMV offices, but registration services are normally restricted to appointments only.

"We want Nevadans to be able to save time," Butler added. "We're encouraging everyone to take a look at the services we provide online at dmv.nv.gov as an alternative to continuing to visit offices in person. As our transformation effort moves forward, more and more of our services will be available digitally, giving you more options as to how you conduct your business with us and when." The DMV estimates that 200,000 transactions that took place in the year 2022 could have been completed by using services that were already available online.
