Excessive Heat Shutters Walk-In Service At DMV |
Record temperatures pose health risks, services still available by appointment |
CARSON CITY – The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced plans today to temporarily suspend “Walk-In Wednesday” services at its Decatur, Flamingo, Sahara, Henderson, and Reno office locations due to intense summertime heat. Starting July 10, 2024, metropolitan offices are moving Wednesday services to appointment-only until temperatures reach more typical levels, at which point Walk-In Wednesdays will resume. “June was by far the hottest month in Las Vegas ever recorded,” said DMV Director Tonya Laney. “Customers continue to line up outside of our Las Vegas offices hours before the doors even open,” Laney explained, “and temperatures are soaring above 100 degrees before 8 a.m. We are noticing increasing temperatures in Reno and want to be proactive for our customers there as well. In order to limit heat exposure both inside and outside our offices, we have decided to revert Wednesdays back to appointment-based only. This is a temporary change until temperatures decrease.” Excessive heat is a serious health concern. Last year, 226 Nevadans succumbed to heat-related illnesses - nearly 10% of all heat-related fatalities in the country. Health officials recommend staying hydrated and having a plan to stay cool including utilizing public resources such as heat shelters if you don’t have access to air conditioning. In order to accommodate customers who would usually visit on Wednesdays, the five offices will only open their books for Wednesday appointments on Tuesday afternoons. This affords customers the same accessibility to services as they would have if they arrived at the office on Wednesday morning and doesn’t allow Wednesday appointments to be booked a week ahead of time. The DMV offers certain services – such as the issuance of movement permits, payment of debts, and some ID card services – without an appointment. These services will continue and remain unaffected. The DMV’s “Walk-In Wednesdays” began in 2023 and allow customers to visit a major metropolitan office on Wednesdays without pre-scheduled appointments – instead, customers scan QR codes at the office to join a virtual queue which manages the office’s traffic. |
