DMV Adds “Communication Need” Symbol to Driver’s Licenses

No Medical Documentation is Required to Get It

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is improving motorist safety by offering drivers with the option to add a communication need symbol to the front of any driver’s license, identification card, or Driver Authorization Card (DAC) starting January 1.

Adding the symbol to a card is optional, no medical documentation or the need to disclose the type of condition is required. The cost to update the information on a card is $8.25.

The symbol can be for a person who:

  • Has hearing loss, is deaf or neurodivergent
  • Has a speech disorder that impairs the ability of the person to articulate speech sounds, speak fluently or use the person’s voice,
  • Has a language or auditory processing disorder that impairs the ability of the person to comprehend language,
  • Or has any other condition that impairs the ability of the person to comprehend language.

Customers seeking this addition to a card must complete this transaction in person at any DMV office and complete DMV form DMV-002 (Application for Driving Privileges) or DMV form CDL-002 (Application for Commercial Driving Privileges). Make an appointment at dmv.nv.gov.

This change resulted from Assembly Bill 161 of the 82nd Session of the Nevada Legislature.
