Discontinued License Plates

Discontinued plates are no longer issued by the Nevada DMV. The plates shown here are still valid for vehicle registration except for the Big Horn Sheep plate.

The original owner of the plate must keep it continually registered to a vehicle or allow it to expire for less than 30 days. The plate may be transferred to another vehicle but not to another person.

Some of the dates the plates were issued are approximate. Most plates with a discontinue date of December 31 failed to maintain the minimum number of active registrations required for charitable plates.

STANDARD PLATES

Sunset License Plate

Sunset - 2001 -2007

The Sunset background was replaced by the Home Means Nevada (HMN) design. The first HMN plates were issued in November 2016.

The design was phased in during 2017. Sunset plates remain valid for registration.


Air Force Plate

Big Horn Sheep - 1983 - 2000

All Big Horn Sheep plates were replaced and are no longer valid for registration.

The DMV began issuing the Sunset plate with the original registrations in January 2001.

Existing Big Horn plates were replaced with Sunset plates in 2002.


Air Force Plate

Blue - 1969 - 1982

Plates issued in the early 1970s abbreviated the state name to "NEV."

The DMV issues replica plates. See Circa 1982 Replica plates.

Existing blue plates do not have to be surrendered and may be used on a vehicle if legible.

Plates prior to 1969 were issued in many different designs.
